Millicom’s e-commerce business team is taking new products and services to millions of new customers and to different markets that fall outside our mobile telecommunications footprint. We are more convinced than ever about the potential for online services in Latin America to grow strongly and leapfrog traditional retail.

E-commerce sales in Chile exceeded 1.7 billion US dollars in 2012 and will continue to grow. Almost two-thirds of all online users in Chile engage in e-commerce, one of the highest proportions in Latin America.

Chileans enjoy shopping online mostly for electronics, concert and event tickets, and plane tickets. Online coupon sites also draw significant traffic, with over 60 per cent of internet users registered with at least one coupon service.

Though domestic retailers currently dominate the e-commerce industry, international retailers are increasingly entering the Chilean market. Shopping via mobile remains a relatively new experience, with only three per cent of Chileans using mobile devices in 2012 to make online purchases.
