South Africa

Millicom’s e-commerce business team is taking new products and services to millions of new customers and to different markets that fall outside our mobile telecommunications footprint. We are more convinced than ever about the potential for online services in Africa to grow strongly and leapfrog traditional retail.

Of the 51 million South Africans, 13 million are online, of which 4.3 million regularly shop via e-Commerce. In 2012, the e-Commerce industry saw 300 million US dollars in sales and this is anticipated to increase to 400 million US dollars in 2013, making South Africa one of the continent’s largest e-Commerce markets.

Plane, movie, and theater tickets are popular product categories.

South Africa is expected to have a remarkable 80 per cent smartphone penetration in 2014, providing a solid foundation for m-Commerce to help fuel total online sales.

Despite this, only 12 per cent of South African shoppers buy using mobile devices which signals a large growth opportunity.
