Uganda

Millicom’s e-commerce business team is taking new products and services to millions of new customers and to different markets that fall outside our mobile telecommunications footprint. We are more convinced than ever about the potential for online services in Africa to grow strongly and leapfrog traditional retail.

Out of 36 million Ugandans, only 15 per cent have internet access. As a result, e-Commerce remains quite recent in the country. Relatively few companies sell goods online, though many businesses do have websites.

Despite these low figures, the number of Ugandans on the internet continues to grow roughly 15-20 per cent annually.

Improvements in mobile communications are also laying the foundations for the e-Commerce industry, with Uganda granting several 4G LTE network licenses in 2012.
